The Sticky on AV Tape

In our world of live events, production, and staging, tape is more than just a roll in the toolbox; it’s a vital part of the show. At ITA, we’ve used just about every kind of sticky wizardry under the spotlight, and trust us, having the right adhesive for the job makes all the difference. But a 3D printer could be changing the game. Let’s roll through the AV industry’s most trusted adhesives, what they’re used for, and why they maybe losing their grip.

Electrical/E Tape

Great for insulating wires and color-coding cables, this stretchy tape gets used often, but its sticky residue means it’s best for electrical tasks, not a stage floor.

Gaff/Gaffer Tape
The MVP of production tape. Strong, flexible, and residue-free, gaff tape is perfect for securing cables, labeling gear, attaching gels to lights, and temporary fixes, all while blending into the background with its matte finish. Bonus: It holds up well around hot lighting equipment.

Duct Tape
Often confused with gaffer tape, but it’s a different beast. Duct tape has a strong grip and stronger residue, making it great for semi-permanent fixes but not recommended on stage or gear unless you love a sticky cleanup.

Spike Tape
Think of this as gaff tape’s colorful cousin. Narrow and vibrant, spike tape is used to mark positions on stage — for actors, equipment, or scene transitions. It’s small but mighty when it comes to keeping a show on cue.

Console Tape (Board Tape)

Used to label faders and controls. It’s easy to write on, removes cleanly, and keeps your console organized.

Why Tape Maybe Losing Its Grip

Wireless Mic Organizer & Color Band System
They say that necessity is the mother of all invention, which is why we designed our own 3D-printed organizing system. We wanted a cleaner, more sustainable way to label transmitters and receivers. These organizers are made from recycled plastic, eliminating the need for E-Tape.

Choosing the right tape isn’t just about sticking things down; it’s about safety, efficiency, and keeping your event running smoothly. From gaff to spike to plastic, ITA has the gear and the know-how to help you do it right. If you need help figuring out what your event needs, call us. We’ll bring the perfect roll or box.
